The USS Midway Museum is an aircraft carrier museum located in San Diego, California, at Navy Pier. The museum has a Midway aircraft carrier. The fleet has a large collection of aircraft, many of which were built in Southern California.
The USS Midway was America’s longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century, from 1945 to 1992. About 200,000 sailors have served aboard aircraft carriers known for many naval aviation advancements and humanitarian missions. It was the only carrier to see service for the duration of the Cold War and beyond. It is now a museum ship in San Diego, California. The Midway opened as a museum on June 7, 2004. In 2012, annual attendance exceeded 1 million people. As of 2015, Midway is the most famous naval museum in the United States. The museum has more than 13,000 members and hosts 700 events yearly, including more than 400 Navy retirement services, enlistments, and command changes. The museum also hosts 50,000 field trip students and 5,000 children at its annual nightly event. Admission includes audio-guided tours narrated by former Midway sailors at more than 60 locations, including quarters, engine rooms, docks, bridges, brigs, post offices, foc’le, pilots, command centers, flight control, and “employee communities.” Other features include planes and cockpits to enter, videos, flight demonstrations, and narrated audio tours for children. In addition to private events, the museum has hosted many occasions, including the nationally broadcast NCAA basketball game between San Diego State University and Syracuse University in 2012. American Idol aired on Midway, as did the Travel Channel, The Discovery Channel, FOX News, The Bachelor, Extreme Makeover, The Channel Channel, and The War Channel. The annual international television wrestling show “Battle on Midway” has been held every November at the airport museum since 2017. Membership has grown to over 25,000. An advanced holographic theater, “The Battle of Midway Theater,” was added in 2017, and in 2019 the museum added a full-scale flight simulator to the existing four flight exhibits. The GI Film Festival and the San Diego International Film Festival have launched screenings at the museum.
